Artist Profile

Marc Lambrechts (Belgian, b. 1955) was born in Lier (Antwerp), and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. After studying at the Higher Sint-Lukas Institute in Brussels, he obtained a scholarship to study printmaking in Bratislava in former Czechoslovakia. Upon returning to Belgium, he started working as a visual artist in charge of graphics at the Center for Brussels Amateur Theater. His prints soon received widespread acclaim which led to collaborations with Moving Space Gallery in Ghent.

In 1983, Lambrechts moved to Brooklyn to study printmaking at Pratt Institute. He also began to paint, and his work was soon selected to be shown at the SoHo Center for Visual Arts and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. Shortly thereafter, he acquired representation by Tibor de Nagy Gallery where his first exhibition was highly reviewed by ARTnews.

Lambrechts has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe, most recently in Meeting in Brooklyn at the Castle Alden Biesen (2014, Bilzen, Belgium), in Starstuff (2014, London), and for an invited solo exhibition at Art Nocturne (2016, Knokke, Belgium). His work is in private, corporate, and institutional collections worldwide, including the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (Los Altos, California), the Edward Albee Collection (New York), Mint Museum (Charlotte, North Carolina), and the Government of Flanders; it has been reviewed in various publications such as ARTnews, NY Arts Magazine, New York Times, Arts and Entertainment, Dortmunder Zeitung, WAZ, Le Soir, Trends, Arts Antiques Auctions, and Kunst&Cultuur. Lambrechts has also curated exhibitions, and served as guest professor at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work appears in several books including Aspects of Belgian Art after 1945 and 25 Jaar Grafiek uit Vlaanderen, both by Willem Elias.

With Cosmic Playground (2017), Galerie Pugliese Levi presented Lambrechts’ first exhibition in Berlin, and his first show in Germany in twenty years.
