Norma Márquez Orozco

Norma Márquez Orozco works with translucency in experimental settings of partly controlled and partly accidental arrangements. Light, time and perception are main subject matters. By endowing elements with random mobility, her work evokes the unpredictable patterns in nature, as well as the impermanence of beliefs and memories. Three-dimensional montages of paper inside translucent paper boxes or cases that resemble envelopes, create open-ended images. Harmonies and tensions arise from the various exchanges between colors, patterns, positive and negative spaces, geometric and organic shapes.

Life experience and the observation of nature are the main sources for Márquez Orozco’s ideas. She sees nature as a unity that emerges from elements connecting and interacting in a permanent transformation and growth. Márquez Orozco points out that when you look at her works, you see them for the first time, every time, because what creates and completes them always changes, like the light and the forms that merge and interact.

Born in Chicago, USA, in 1966, and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Norma Márquez Orozco began and consolidated her career as an artist in New York City. Reaching back more than 20 years, her work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico and Spain. In 2019 she moved to Luxembourg, where she now lives and works. She has been represented in Germany by Galerie Pugliese Levi since 2020.

In addition to showing her work on exhibitions, she has also curated exhibitions and has presented conferences and public artist talks. Exhibition venues include: ODETTA, Brooklyn; Center for Book Arts NY, Longwood Art Gallery, Bronx; Queens Museum; The (S) Files 007/The Biennale El Barrio Museum; Art Agora; Cervantes Institute in NY; She has also participated in art fairs such as: Art on Paper New York; Affordable Art Fair New York; and MASQUELIBROS International Artists Book Fair of Madrid.
